The Northern New Jersey Maternal Child Health Consortium

Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies (HMHB) of Essex is an affiliate of the Northern NJ Maternal/Child Consortium. The HM/HB of Essex initiates programs that bring women into prenatal care and children into pediatric care. The centers mission is to improve access to quality and risk appropriate health services for women and children through advocacy, program development, and community education. HM/HB of Essex collaborates with several local community-based organizations with specialty expertise in the areas of community outreach, health screening, asthma diagnosis and treatment, and to develop other worthwhile programs to address unmet needs. The HM/HB of Essex provides administrative oversight of its affiliated centers, as well as grant development for new outreach programs. The HM/HB of Essex supports the activities of these centers, Irvington Family Development Center, East Orange Asthma Intervention and Relief (AIR) project, and the Safety Net Program.

Distributes pregnancy health information, provides case management for pregnant women and/mother-infant pairs. Provides mentor training for volunteers. Recruits fathers to participate in a man-to-man program.

Provides free pregnancy tests and substance abuse and pregnancy prevention workshops for teenagers. Provides case management for pregnant women and/mother-infant pairs. Provides pregnancy prevention workshops for teenagers. Comenzando Bien (Good Beginning) provides prenatal education for Hispanic women.

Provides free pregnancy tests for women. Provides case management for pregnant women and/mother-infant pairs. Recruits pregnant women for Nutrition/Infant care/Breastfeeding. Provides home visits to pregnant women and/mother-infant pairs.

Programs operated out of the HM/HB of Essex Newark office Mobile Screening Project Provides developmental, vision, hearing and dental screenings to children from birth to six years of age enrolled in Newark Childcare Centers Participation includes 850 children from 14 Childcare Centers to date Funded by United Way of Essex and West Hudson Enrollment program into NJKidCare Program Outreach workers will locate and educate families with eligible children and to assist the families to enroll in NJKidCare, a comprehensive and affordable health coverage program for children in New Jersey. Emergency Resource Provision to pregnant women and young mothers HM/HB of Essex provides diapers, baby clothes, car seats and formula to new mothers who could not otherwise afford them. In the state of New Jersey a proper infant car seat must be used in order for the a new mother is discharged with her newborn. St. Columba Neighborhood Club Provides free pregnancy tests for women. Provides case management for pregnant women and/mother-infant pairs. Recruits pregnant women for Nutrition/Infant care/Breastfeeding. Provides home visits to pregnant women and/mother-infant pairs.
