Safety Net Program of Orange

The Safety Net of Orange, in conjunction with Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies of Essex, operates the Center. The Program run at the Center specifically addresses low birth weight and high Black infant mortality in the city of Orange.

Healthy Mothers/Health Babies (HMHB) of Essex, as an affiliate of the Northern NJ Maternal/Child Consortium, oversees the Center and the meeting of the goals and objectives. In collaboration with NNJM/CHC, HM/HB is responsible for tracking the impact of this program upon the problem of low birth weight and high Black infant mortality in the city in Orange NJ.

Safety Net of Orange

The Safety Net of Orange Outreach Worker assists perinatal and pediatric health care providers in locating women and infants [Orange residents] identified as delinquent in their scheduled care plan. In addition, the Safety Net of Orange provides emergency food/clothing for infants, housing referrals, and substance abuse prevention workshops.

Housing Referrals

Due to the closing of housing projects in the city of Orange, there are many displaced residents. Safety Net of Orange assists pregnant women and new mothers identify and secure new housing after within the community.


Enrollment program into NJKidCare Program

Outreach workers will locate and educate families with eligible children and to assist the families to enroll in NJKidCare, a comprehensive and affordable health coverage program for children in New Jersey.

Health Education Workshops

The goal of the program is to increase the availability and accessibility of prevention, early intervention, for at-risk pregnant and post-partum women and their infants. In these groups, women learn the dangers of substance use during pregnancy, discuss relationship difficulties, and address a range of other issues of concern to them. The workshops are designed to reduce the incidence and prevalence of substance use among pregnant women, improve birth outcomes and reduce infant mortality among women who use alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy, and reduce the incidence of abuse and neglect among children of substance-using mothers.
