Adult Literacy Classes - Literacy is a Family Affair:
The IFDC, in conjunction with the Newark Literacy Campaign, has designed a basic skills reading/writing and life skills course to improve the literacy skills amongst parents and caregivers while encouraging participants to read to their children and assist with their homework. The goal of this program is to improve the literacy and basic skills of caregivers, enabling them to better support their child's education. Home-Based Childcare Provider Literacy Enhancement Program:
In collaboration with Programs for Parents (PFP), a Literacy Enhancement Program has been created to provide training, continuing education credits, instruction on stimulating early language, sensorimotor development, social development, and on improving childcare practices for registered home-based childcare providers in Irvington . To implement the literacy program, PFP provides in-home literacy education and child stimulation activity modeling.
Financial Literacy Program:
The IFDC collaborated with Rogina Smith, President and CEO of Positive Image Consulting, Author, Motivational Speaker & Independent Financial Consultant to provide a Financial Empowerment Class to parents and caregivers in Irvington . This financial empowerment banking course includes instruction on basic banking, establishing credit and acquiring financial freedom. The goals of this program are to help individuals understand the importance of banking, dispel myths about who can bank, and help participants establish bank accounts.
"Celebrities Read Festival" (Adults and Children):
The IFDC co-sponsors a "Celebrities Read Festival" with the Irvington Public Library and the Division of Youth and Family Services to provide Irvington families with a full day of free educational workshops face painting, entertainment and food. Local "Celebrities" read to groups of children as parents attended workshops focused on the importance of reading with children, and developing reading skills to enhance the educational experience of their children. Children and parents were also encouraged to register for a free library card and take out books. Free children's and adult books are also distributed, compliments of IFDC .
