Health Planning
Analyzes health statistics and trends to gain insights into maternal/child health needs. The organization utilizes this information as the basis for developing programs that address gaps in services. The Northern Consortium prepares a Regional Perinatal and Pediatric Plan every three years. This document is a comprehensive analysis of the services, both health and social, in the region. Included in the Plan is an analysis of the findings from a community needs assessment. The comparison of available services to poor health indicators results in the identification of key issues for action. These issues include barriers to primary care, teenage pregnancy, child abuse and neglect, impact of managed care, maternal/child HIV and AIDS, perinatal substance abuse, racial/ethnic disparities in infant mortality, and well child health.
Program Development
In order to provide direct service and explore effective strategies, the Northern Consortium undertakes pilot projects which seek to inform consumers and/or enhance provider sensitivity to patient needs. Competitive grant awards fund many of these projects.
Program Evaluation
All Northern Consortium programs incorporate an evaluation component. With a focus on accountability, the Northern Consortium compares the end result of each program with its intended goals. Projects that successfully meet their original objectives are promoted as models for positive change. The Northern Consortium develops and presents reports on maternal and neonatal indicators of care. Past Consortium programs are listed in the Programs area of this site.
Education
The Northern Consortium sponsors conferences for health care professionals as well as consumers which cover important topics in the broad area of maternal and child health. Our educational seminars tackle challenging and pertinent perinatal and pediatric issues that are often not addressed by other providers or organizations (see Calendar area of this web site).
Research
The Northern Consortium is committed to ongoing community-based research to understand problems impacting health care needs and service delivery. The research allows for the implementation of scientifically sound solutions.
