LITERACY
The goals of the literacy program are: 1) To improve the reading and writing skills of parents/caregivers; 2) To increase the frequency of parents/caregivers reading to children in the homes; 3) To enhance the literacy skills and training of childcare providers; 4) To increase the computer literacy skills of children and women of childbearing age; and 5) To develop the financial literacy skills of parents/caregivers.
EARLY CHILDHOOD MENTAL HEALTH
The Early Childhood Mental Health Program, recently named the Play, Grow, and Heal Project, emphasizes three core strategies for providing services: prevention, early intervention and treatment. Prevention is addressed through professional and parent education, early intervention is addressed through screening of children in daycare centers for behavioral health red flags, and time-limited treatment is provided to identified children and their families through therapeutic counseling, play therapy and, when appropriate, group therapy.
PRENATAL AND HEALTH SERVICES
The Prenatal and Health Services component of the IFDC incorporates screenings for children, pregnancy tests, health education, and case management for clients. The goals of this component are: 1) Early identification of hearing, vision, dental and developmental abnormalities; 2) Entry into prenatal care during the 1st trimester of pregnancy; and 3) Improve health behaviors and choices through health education.
